Festival Director 2024Sara HayesMon, 13 May 2024 10:59:52 +0000/our-team/festival-director-20245dc4534716995d66930d08dc:5dc487b54a94cf51f449be5d:663cf427dcca660bde85ab88I have returned for my second year on the Urban Tree Festival and I鈥檝e been taking the lead role this year, supported by the knowledgeable Paul Wood (@thestreettree) and a fantastic team of six interns from Goldsmiths University, and of course not forgetting all our fantastic event organisers who make the festival what it is!

Joining forces with our partners CPRELondon I worked on a funding push in the lead up to the festival, and we are pleased to have received sponsorship from and this year.

Our focus has been expanding the diverse reach of the festival, increasing the amount of accessible events, alongside delving into the heritage of trees and their value alongside continuing our work promoting and supporting urban trees.

Delivering the festival, which is upwards of 70 events this year, involves gathering and processing a tonne of data, last year I implimented a submissions form, and we encouraged everyone to use it this year getting up to around 95% of the content submitted through it.

Festival branding and marketing is also a huge task, and I have in place a regulated system to ensure all events receive coverage across social media platforms during the festival.

Having a larger support team this year has meant I have been able to work with providers more, building realtionships and planning ahead for next years festival, for which we have a potential new funding partner in our sights and an exciting theme planned!

The project ties in so well with my work, delivering arts in the public realm with a strong environmental message is key for me! As a walking trail designer that can be working with crafts people to make environmentally friendly sustainable wooden signage, or referencing trees as an important way finding element both in cities and the countryside.

I look forward to expanding my own knowledge though the rich diversity of speakers, walks and writings in the festival this year, plus I will be sharing some of the fantastic trees we have in the newly appointed City of Colchester!"

His global cultural history of the mulberry tree, Mulberry, is published by Reaktion Books (2019).

鈥淚鈥檓 Peter. I鈥檝e had a deep love of trees ever since I was a child, growing up on the edge of an ancient beechwood in the Chilterns. Having lived most of my adult life in cities, though, I鈥檝e found the trees of the streets, parks, gardens and surviving pockets of woodland essential for my wellbeing. As a writer, researcher and photographer, I am particularly fascinated by old urban trees as witnesses to a past that may have been buried long ago under developments. This is why I helped to set up the Morus Londinium project to document, preserve and raise awareness of London鈥檚 mulberry trees and their fascinating heritage. Old mulberry trees always have a story to tell.鈥

Artist Katherine Pogson鈥檚 work considers human relationships with nature. Her practice uses Lepidoptery - the study of butterflies and moths - as an entry point for exploring an 鈥榦ther-than-human鈥 view of the world.

In the Anthropocene age, and with growing awareness of the climate emergency, this inevitably encounters stories of loss, damage and extinction. However, in taking a moth鈥檚-eye view, this work focuses instead on the requirements for flourishing life - nourishment, procreation and the space to move freely.

She hopes to continue learning in her path of event management, while branching out into the thrilling world of the entertainment industry!
